Gun safes ranked by what the label can prove
Most gun safes are sold on gauges and fire minutes nobody outside the factory measured. We start with what an independent lab listed, then steel, lock, fire evidence and fit.

The best gun safes for home start with a lab's rating
Top pick: American Security BFX6030. A UL RSC Level 1 gun safe with an ETL fire rating of 120 minutes at 1,200°F, a 1/2-in steel plate door and a double-wall 11/12-gauge body, for owners who want both burglary and fire ratings from outside labs and will buy through a dealer.
Sold through dealers, not Amazon. Plain link: we don't earn a commission there.
What to buy first
Start with the threat, not the safe. If the goal is keeping firearms away from children and visitors, any anchored, locked container whose code or key they can't reach does that job, and a steel gun cabinet may be enough. If you're worried about a break-in, you want a UL burglary listing. If you're worried about a house fire, you want a fire rating someone other than the maker verified. Most families want all three, which is why our best gun safes ranking is led by safes that carry both an independent burglary listing and an independently verified fire rating.
From there, pick the list that matches your situation. The best gun safes for the money shows where extra spending buys real protection. Fire-rated gun safes are sorted by who verified the rating. Long gun safes are sized by published interior depth, for owners with scoped rifles. And gun safes for apartments are ranked for stairs, rented floors and leases that limit drilling.
How gun safes divide
Every product we rank carries one protection tier, and gun storage splits across three of them.
Access boxes stop children and unauthorized hands, not a determined burglar with tools. Gun cabinets, entry-level safes and every safe without a burglary listing sit here, however heavy they are.
UL RSC safes carry a UL 1037 Residential Security Container listing. UL describes the Level 1 test as a "five-minute attack by one technician using common hand tools such as drills, screwdrivers and hammers" (UL's notice on the revised RSC standard). It's an entry-level burglary rating, and it says nothing about fire, but it's the independent burglary rating residential gun safes are sold with.
UL TL-rated safes (TL-15 and TL-30) are tested to a different standard, UL 687, against a timed expert attack that includes power tools. They're commercial products: very heavy and usually sold through dealers.
Fire is a separate question with its own evidence. A fire rating is a time at a furnace temperature, and the difference that matters most is who measured it. Intertek, which issues the ETL mark, and UL are both on OSHA's list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. Most gun-safe fire ratings, though, come from the maker's own test, and we label them that way on every card.
What decides the price
The costs that buy protection are steel, outside testing and insulation. Steel gauge runs backward, so a 10-gauge body is thicker than a 12-gauge one, and each step thicker adds weight and moves a safe up its maker's range; Liberty's line, for example, runs from a 14-gauge body on its entry series to 7-gauge on its heaviest. A UL listing means the design went through an independent attack test. Fire insulation adds layers to the walls and door. After those come the lock (a UL-listed electronic lock, a mechanical dial or both), the size of the body, and then the finish and extras: paint, chrome, lighting, outlets and door organizers. Only the first few protect anything. Our value ranking separates the two, and our steel gauge explainer turns gauges into inches.
The mistake to avoid first
Paying for a label nobody checked. The claims that sound like certifications but aren't are the costly ones: "RSC-style" construction with no UL listing, a UL-listed lock on an unlisted body, a "CA DOJ approved" line read as a burglary rating, or fire minutes from the maker's own furnace compared as if a lab had run them. Each can leave a family's firearms behind less protection than they paid for.
The fix is simple. Find the listing in writing on the maker's product page, ask who measured the fire rating and at what temperature, and plan to bolt the safe down before you load it. Our gun safe red flags guide lists the specs to walk away from, and what "CA DOJ approved" means untangles the California claims.
Where to go next
New to this? How to choose a gun safe walks through the questions in order, and the gun safe size guide helps you estimate a realistic capacity. Weighing brands? Read our Liberty safes review and Liberty vs Cannon. Not sure you need a safe at all? Gun safe vs gun cabinet and are gun safes worth it cover the decision honestly.
To read a spec sheet the way we do, start with the ratings explainers: UL RSC rating explained, safe fire ratings explained and electronic vs mechanical safe locks. Then set it up so it works: bolt it down, check whether your floor can carry it, decide where to put it, and keep an eye on humidity inside the safe.
