Setup & Storage
Setup and safe storage: making the safe do its job
An unanchored safe can be carried off, a damp one can rust what's inside, and a safe left open protects nothing. This is the part after the purchase: placement, bolting, humidity and family routines.

The part after the purchase
Buying a safe is the start of the job, not the end of it. A safe protects what's inside only when it's anchored, shut, locked, dry and placed where it can do its work. This section covers that second half: bolting down, placement, floor load, humidity, lighting, locks, and the routines that keep guns away from children. Nothing here replaces the maker's own instructions for your safe. It helps you follow them well and spot what they leave out.
What to do first
If you've just brought a safe home, work in this order. First, decide where to put the gun safe, weighing humidity, fire, access and concealment, and check whether your floor can support it. Second, anchor it. Our guide on how to bolt down a gun safe covers concrete, wood subfloors and carpet. Third, deal with moisture: read the gun safe humidity levels guide, then choose from our best gun safe dehumidifiers. Lighting comes last, and our gun safe lighting kits page covers battery and plug-in options.
Getting a safe into the house in the first place is its own job. Our guide on how to move a gun safe covers when to do it yourself and when to hire safe movers.
What each task protects against
The rest of this site sorts safes by the threat they stop: children and casual hands, a real burglary attempt, or a house fire. Setup tasks line up the same way.
Anchoring is about theft. UL's residential security container standard treats mounting as part of the design: products weighing 750 pounds or less must pass a drop test unless reliably mounted using the maker's installation provisions. A safe that can be tipped or wheeled away hasn't finished its job.
Placement touches every threat at once: how exposed the safe is to fire and to damp, how easily a burglar can reach it, and whether the floor underneath can carry the load.
Humidity control is about the contents. Liberty Safe, citing the NRA, puts the recommended range for a gun safe between 30% and 50%. A dehumidifier and a hygrometer are how you hold and prove it.
Locks and family routines are about access. Our guide to storing guns safely with kids covers layered storage and the law, and trigger lock vs gun safe explains why a lock is an extra layer, not a substitute for a locked container.
A handgun kept for home defense is a special case: it has to stay locked and still be reachable. Our guide on how to store a handgun for home defense covers that balance.
What decides what you'll spend
For accessories, start with the type rather than the brand. A dehumidifier is a plug-in rod, a rechargeable desiccant unit or a passive canister, and each asks for different things from your safe and your routine. Our electric vs rechargeable comparison lays out the trade-offs. With lights, the split is battery against plug-in, and with anchoring it's the hardware your floor needs. What should move you toward one product over another is the evidence the maker publishes: stated coverage, a safety listing for anything that plugs in, and warranty terms. Several of the accessories we rank come with thin spec sheets, missing a wattage, a safety listing or a warranty length, and we score that gap openly.
The biggest mistake: treating the purchase as the finish line
The failures that undo a good safe are simple ones: a safe that was never bolted down, a door left open, a code written somewhere a child can find it, or a safe in a damp corner that slowly rusts its contents. None of these is fixed by buying a better safe. Each is fixed by the setup steps above.
Renters face one extra constraint: drilling into a floor or wall may not be allowed. If that's you, ask the landlord before anchoring, and look at our best gun safes for apartments, which weighs lighter safes and anchoring options for rented homes.
Where to go next
If you're still choosing the safe itself, start with the ratings. Our explainers cover the UL RSC burglary rating, safe fire ratings, steel gauge and electronic vs mechanical locks. If you're buying for someone else, our gifts for gun owners and gifts for new gun owners explain what to check before you buy.
