Best "fireproof" gun safes: the fire ratings a lab verified

Why we say fire-rated, not "fireproof"

Every fire rating on a gun safe has three parts: a time, a furnace temperature and an interior limit. "60 minutes at 1,200°F, interior kept under 350°F" means the inside stayed below 350°F for an hour in a test furnace held at 1,200°F. The 350°F figure isn't arbitrary. UL's record-protection standard, UL 72, uses Class 350 for devices "intended to protect paper records" (UL 72 at UL Standards & Engagement).

A rating tells you how long the interior held under its limit in a test. It doesn't promise anything past that time, and it doesn't describe your house fire. That's why no honest rating says "fireproof," and why we only use the word in quotes, as the search term it is.

There's a fourth part that matters more than the other three: who ran the test.

Who verified the rating

This page sorts gun safes into two groups: fire ratings a named, independent lab verified, and everything else. Within each group, the order follows our published score.

Why ETL counts: Intertek Testing Services, which issues the ETL mark, is on OSHA's list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories, as is UL. When a maker names the lab, you know whose test the claim rests on. When it doesn't, you have only the maker's word.

UL 72 classification is the other independent route. It's common on document safes and fire chests, and none of the gun safes we cover lists one. If you're protecting paper, photos or media more than firearms, see safes with a verified fire rating and our fire safe ranking.

Time and temperature aren't comparable across makers

The gun-safe fire claims we collected use at least four furnace temperatures: 1,200°F (AMSEC's ETL ratings, Liberty and Stealth), 1,400°F (Kodiak, Sports Afield, Winchester and Hollon's Republic series), 1,850°F (AMSEC's RF6528) and 1,875°F (Steelwater). Some state the interior limit and some don't, and a few publish minutes with no test temperature at all. So "75 minutes" from one maker and "60 minutes" from another may describe different tests.

Compare minutes only when the temperature, the interior limit and the tester match. When you shortlist safes, write down all four for each one; if any is missing, treat the rating as a maker claim. On this page, five of the seven picks state their time at 1,200°F, which is the closest thing to an apples-to-apples comparison the gun-safe market offers. What's in the walls and the door

A fire rating comes from the insulation in the body and door and from the seal around the door. The makers of the top picks describe both:

• AMSEC BFX6030: a "seamless, poured concrete-based composite" insulation AMSEC calls DryLight, in place of drywall, plus "a heat-expanding seal (Palusol) that swells when exposed to high temperatures" and a high-temperature silicone seal.
• AMSEC NF6036: three to four layers of drywall panels and a two-stage seal, silicone on the door jamb and an expandable Palusol seal on the door, per a retailer's listing.
• Liberty Lincoln, Franklin and Presidential: Liberty's "Cool Box" fire protection and a "Palusol heat-activated door seal" that expands to protect against smoke and heat.

Makers describe these seals as keeping smoke out, and some say water too. None is rated separately, so treat the seal as part of the fire rating rather than a bonus on top of it.

How we sorted and scored

We sorted by evidence first, as the page promises: ETL-verified ratings at the top, then everything without a named lab. Within each group, the order follows each safe's score on our published gun-safe rubric (see how we rate), where fire protection evidence is 20% of the score and an independent burglary listing is 30%. That's why a burglary listing still matters on a fire page: a fire isn't the only thing a gun safe has to survive. Our top pick here is the same safe that leads our overall gun safe ranking. We'd rather not repeat a winner, but the evidence demands it: no other gun safe we cover matches its independently verified fire rating, and it carries a UL burglary listing as well.

The evidence side by side

The picks in context

1. American Security BFX6030

Both of its ratings come from outside labs: an ETL-verified 120 minutes at 1,200°F and a UL RSC Level 1 burglary rating. AMSEC also describes the fire protection in unusual detail: a poured, concrete-based insulation in place of drywall, between an 11-gauge outer wall and a 12-gauge inner wall, plus a Palusol seal and a silicone seal on the door. It weighs 1,081 lb and is sold through AMSEC dealers, so the link on its card is a plain reference to the maker's site.

2. American Security NF6036

The Amazon-available version of the same kind of evidence: an ETL-verified 90 minutes at 1,200°F, a UL RSC Level 1 rating, an 11-gauge body and a 1/4-in plate door. Its insulation is conventional drywall (three to four layers, per the retailer) behind a two-stage door seal. At 977 lb and 36 in wide, measure your doorways first, and confirm the lock model at purchase, since the retailer lists an ESL10 and AMSEC's 2025 page listed an ESL5.

3. American Security RF6528

For owners who want the most protection on both fronts and can take the weight. AMSEC calls its 120 minutes at 1,850°F "independently certified" without naming the lab, so we can't group it with the ETL-verified pair. Its burglary rating, though, is a class above theirs: UL TL-30, per a retailer's spec sheet. At 3,455 lb it's a job for the dealer and a slab floor.

4. Liberty Presidential 25

The longest fire claim at 1,200°F on this page, 2.5 hours, from Liberty's own testing, with a Palusol door seal and a 7-gauge body. Liberty names no outside lab for the rating. It includes a factory dehumidifier and lighting, weighs 1,021 lb, and its RSC designation comes from a retailer's spec sheet rather than Liberty's page.

5. Liberty Lincoln 25

Two hours at 1,200°F by Liberty's claim, a Palusol door seal, and the clearest burglary evidence in Liberty's range: the Lincoln's own page names its UL Residential Security Container listing. It has a 10-gauge body, a choice of three locks and a weight of 767 lb.

6. Liberty Franklin 29

Liberty calls its 110 minutes at 1,200°F "certified" but names no testing lab, so it sits with the maker claims. It pairs an 11-gauge body with a UL-listed Sargent & Greenleaf Direct Drive electronic lock and a 20.5 in deep interior, and it's sold through Liberty dealers and Liberty's own site.

7. Sports Afield Haven SA5930HX

The only pick here with a published water claim: Sports Afield says it's "waterproof in 2' for 7 days," it ships with a waterproof bolt-down kit, and its lifetime warranty covers natural flood as well as fire and theft. Both the water claim and its 75 minutes at 1,400°F are maker figures with no lab named, and it has no burglary listing, which is why it ranks last. It's here for owners whose safe has to sit in a flood-prone basement. Sports Afield's biometric 4-gun model was recalled in 2024; this keypad model isn't on that recall.

What to look for in a fire-rated gun safe

1. The lab's name on the maker's page. Look for wording like "ETL-verified," "independently tested by ETL" or a UL class label. "Certified" with no lab named is a maker claim.
2. All three numbers. Time, furnace temperature and interior limit. A rating with no temperature can't be compared with anything.
3. Described insulation and seals. Makers that publish what's in the walls and around the door give you more to check than a bare minute count.
4. The fire warranty. Several makers promise repair or replacement after a fire. Read who handles the claim: Cannon, for example, sends burglary and fire claims to your property insurer first, while Liberty's lifetime warranty is transferable.
5. A burglary listing too. A fire-rated safe still has to keep out children and thieves on every other day of the year.

What a gun safe protects in a fire

A 350°F interior limit is a paper standard. UL 72 sets separate classes for other records: Class 150 for "paper and nonpaper records such as EDP media (magnetic tapes) and photographic records," and Class 125 for devices that also protect flexible computer disks. So a gun safe rated to keep the interior under 350°F isn't designed around hard drives, film or photo prints. If you keep those in your gun safe, put them in a small media-rated chest inside it. Placement still matters. Bolt the safe down on a floor that can carry it (see can your floor support a gun safe), and read where to put a gun safe before choosing a room.

Fire-rating mistakes

• Buying the biggest number. A 150-minute maker claim isn't proven better than a 90-minute ETL-verified rating. Who measured it comes first.
• Mixing up the fireboard and the safe. Some listings say "UL rated" about the fire-resistant board inside the walls. That isn't a UL fire classification of the safe; Winchester's Ranger 26 is an example of this wording.
• Leaving the safe unanchored. A fire rating doesn't help if the safe is carried off first. Bolt it down with the maker's anchor holes before you load it; our bolt-down guide covers concrete and wood floors.
• Assuming a fire rating means burglary protection. They're separate tests. Check both lines.
• Storing media as if it were paper. See the UL 72 classes above.
• Forgetting the lock after a fire. If a fire or water damages the lock, don't force the door. Use the maker's backup entry as the manual describes, then contact the maker or a licensed locksmith.
