About Bolt & Vault
A small, independent safe desk that reads the label first: who certified the safe, to what standard, and what the spec sheet actually shows.

Why this site exists
Safes are sold on numbers most buyers can't check: steel gauges, "fireproof" minutes, "RSC rated" stickers, gun counts that assume every rifle is a bare stick. Some of those numbers come from an independent lab. Many come from the manufacturer's own furnace, or from nowhere at all. For someone buying a safe to protect a family, a home's papers or a firearm from a curious child, the difference matters more than the paint and chrome.
Bolt & Vault exists to sort those claims. Every safe we cover is labeled by the threat it actually stops, and every rating is traced to whoever issued it. When a claim has no independent source, we say so on the page.
What we do, and what we don't
- We rank on evidence. An independent listing comes first (UL 1037 for residential burglary resistance, UL 72 or an Intertek/ETL verification for fire), then the maker's published steel, lock and bolt-down specs, then fit and support. The weights are public on How We Rate.
- We label every pick "Researched." We have not drilled, burned, flooded or installed the safes on this site, and we never claim we did. Each product's evidence table links to the listing, spec page and CPSC recall search behind it, so you can check our work.
- We sort by threat. A lock box, a fire chest and a UL-listed burglary safe do different jobs. Every product carries a tier: access box, fire chest, UL RSC or UL TL-rated.
- We don't publish bypass methods. We explain that attacks exist and which ratings resist them. We never explain how to open, defeat or bypass a safe or lock.
- We don't print prices. Amazon sets prices and changes them often, so buttons say "Check price on Amazon" until a live, dated price feed is connected.
Who runs it
Bolt & Vault is written by Mike M., the owner-operator behind Iron Mako Media, an independent publisher that runs a portfolio of gear-review sites. Mike ranks safes on what can be verified and labels every pick with how it was evaluated. We don't list credentials we can't show you, and we don't invent experts.
How the site is funded
When you buy through a link on this site, we may earn a commission from the retailer at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick, and no brand pays for placement or reviews. The full statement is on the affiliate disclosure page, and our sourcing and corrections rules are in the editorial policy.
