The best gun safes for home start with a lab's rating

Who this ranking is for

This list is for a household that wants its firearms locked away from children and visitors, harder to steal in a break-in, and protected for a while if the house burns. Those are three different threats. Almost any locked, anchored steel box handles the first. The second is what a burglary listing measures. The third is what a fire rating measures, and it matters a great deal who did the measuring.

So we ranked the way a careful buyer should shop: an independent burglary listing first, then published steel and lock specs, then the fire rating and who verified it, then fit. Every pick below carries a stated UL burglary listing, either on the maker's own page or, for the AMSEC RF6528 and the Liberty Presidential 25, on a retailer's spec sheet (we say which in each case). Safes that only claim "RSC-style" construction, or that put a UL-listed lock on an unlisted body, didn't make this list.

What each tier on this list actually stops

Every product on this site carries one tier label. Three of them apply to gun safes:

UL describes RSC Level 1 as a "five-minute attack by one technician using common hand tools such as drills, screwdrivers and hammers" (UL's notice on the revised RSC standard). That's a real, independent test, and it's also an entry-level burglary rating: minutes, hand tools, one person. It says nothing about fire. Levels 2 and 3 add a second technician, ten minutes and more aggressive tools. The two AMSEC RSC safes here state Level 1; the others state an RSC listing without naming a level.

How we scored them

Each safe is scored on the gun-safe rubric we publish on our how we rate page: an independent burglary certification carries 30% of the score, construction 20%, fire protection evidence 20%, lock and entry 15%, fit and usability 10%, and support and transparency 5%. The scores are editorial judgments built from listings, spec sheets and CPSC recall searches. We did not lab-test, open or install any of these safes, and nothing here depends on a claim that we did.

Three rules decide most of the order. A listing beats a longer spec sheet: a safe with a UL RSC listing outranks an unlisted safe with thicker steel, because the listing is the only burglary evidence produced outside the factory (what a UL RSC listing proves). A fire rating counts for more when a lab verified it: ETL verification scores well above a maker's own furnace test (how to read a fire rating). And published steel beats adjectives: a body gauge we can cite counts, "heavy-duty" doesn't (steel gauge in plain inches). Locks are scored on their own listing and on the backup plan if they fail (electronic vs mechanical locks).

Four of the picks, compared on the fields that decide the ranking. Every value links to the page it came from, and a dash means the figure isn't in the sources we cite.

Why the order looks like this

1. American Security BFX6030

Both of its headline claims come from outside the factory. AMSEC states a UL RSC Level 1 burglary rating and an ETL fire rating of 120 minutes at 1,200°F, and the construction behind them is published: a 1/2-in steel plate door and a double steel wall (11-gauge outer, 12-gauge inner) with concrete insulation between the walls, per a retailer's spec sheet. AMSEC also describes dual door seals, one of them a heat-expanding Palusol seal. The trade-offs are practical. It weighs 1,081 lb, and it's sold through AMSEC dealers rather than Amazon, so the link on its card goes to the maker's site and earns us nothing.

2. American Security NF6036

The NF6036 carries the same pair of independent ratings in a safe you can buy on Amazon: UL RSC Level 1 and an ETL-verified 90 minutes at 1,200°F, with an 11-gauge body and a 1/4-in plate door. We rank it above the higher-scoring RF6528 because this list is for homes, and a 977 lb safe is a far simpler floor and delivery problem than a 3,455 lb one. Confirm one detail before you order: the retailer lists a UL-rated ESL10 electronic lock, while AMSEC's 2025 product page listed an ESL5.

3. American Security RF6528

This is the strongest burglary rating on the page: UL TL-30, a commercial high-security rating a class above residential RSC listings, per a retailer's spec sheet, behind a 6-in composite door and a 3-in steel body. It ranks third, not first, for two reasons. AMSEC calls its two-hour, 1,850°F fire rating "independently certified" but doesn't name the lab, so we score it as a maker claim. And at 3,455 lb it needs a floor, a doorway and a delivery plan you should confirm with the dealer and, for anything but a slab, a structural engineer before ordering.

4. Liberty Presidential 25

Liberty's heaviest series has a 7-gauge body, twelve 1/2-in locking bars and a UL-listed Sargent & Greenleaf mechanical lock as standard, with a factory dehumidifier and motion-sensing lighting included. The RSC wording comes from retailer Dean Safe's spec sheet; Liberty's own page says "UL-listed safe body" without naming the standard. Its 2.5-hour fire rating at 1,200°F is Liberty's claim with no outside lab named, which is why it trails the two AMSEC safes with ETL-verified fire ratings despite having more steel. It weighs 1,021 lb.

5. Liberty Lincoln 25

If you want the clearest maker-stated listing in Liberty's range, this is it: the Lincoln's own page names its UL Residential Security Container listing. It pairs a 10-gauge body and ten 3/8-in locking bars with a choice of three locks at order, including a mechanical option for owners who don't want batteries. Liberty rates it at 120 minutes at 1,200°F and describes a Palusol heat-activated door seal; no outside lab is named for the fire rating. At 767 lb it needs a 26.5-in doorway, per Liberty.

6. Stealth UL28

The UL28 brings a maker-stated UL RSC listing down to 529 lb. It has a 12-gauge door and body, twelve 1.25 in bolts working in four directions, a UL-listed electronic lock with a mechanical dial offered as an upgrade, and a lifetime warranty that covers break-ins and house fires. Its 60-minute fire rating at 1,200°F is the maker's figure. No override key is listed for the electronic lock, so plan on spare batteries or choose the dial.

7. Stealth UL14

For a smaller collection, the UL14 keeps the same listing and 12-gauge build in a 20 x 17 in footprint at 365 lb. Stealth publishes the interior (52 x 17 x 11 in), and the 11 in depth is the catch: its 14-gun count assumes unscoped long guns. Five checks before you buy

1. Name the threat. If the goal is keeping a child or a visitor out, the lock, the code and the anchoring matter most, and a cabinet or an unlisted safe may be enough (see the best gun cabinets). If you're worried about a break-in, buy a listing. If you're worried about fire, buy a fire rating someone other than the maker verified.
2. Find the listing in writing. On the maker's product page, look for "UL" together with "Residential Security Container" or "RSC". If the listing appears only on a retailer's spec sheet, as with some Liberty models, that's weaker evidence, and we label it that way on every card.
3. Ask who measured the fire rating. Time and temperature ("120 minutes at 1,200°F") are only half a fire rating. The other half is who ran the test: an independent lab, or the maker. Intertek, which issues the ETL mark, and UL are both on OSHA's list of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. A maker's own furnace test may be accurate, but nobody outside has checked it.
4. Size for the guns you own, not the number on the box. Advertised gun counts assume slim, unscoped long guns in every slot. Liberty's own spec pages say "gun capacity may vary depending upon size of guns and scopes." Compare your widest scoped rifle with the published interior depth, and see our long-gun safe picks if rifles are most of what you store.
5. Measure the route in. Weight, doorways and the floor come before features. Liberty lists a 26.5-in minimum doorway for both the Lincoln 25 and the Presidential 25, and the AMSEC safes here run from 977 to 3,455 lb. Install it so the rating counts

A burglary rating assumes the safe stays where you put it. UL's revised RSC standard requires safes weighing 750 lb or less to pass a drop test unless they're reliably mounted using the maker's installation provisions, so the standard itself treats anchoring as part of how a lighter safe resists attack. The AMSEC and Stealth safes here come with pre-cut or pre-drilled anchor holes, and Liberty describes bolting the Lincoln down from the inside as part of dealer installation; ask the dealer to do the same for a Presidential. Mistakes that undo a good safe

• Reading "CA DOJ approved" as a burglary rating. California's gun-safe standard sets construction minimums, such as a 12-gauge body for a single-walled safe and at least three 1/2-in steel locking bolts (11 CCR § 4100), and the state keeps a separate roster of certified firearm safety devices (mostly locks and lock boxes, plus some safes). Neither is a timed attack test. This is a summary, not legal advice; check your own state's official sources for storage rules.
• Comparing fire minutes as if they were the same test. Even on this list, fire claims run from 1,200°F to 1,850°F, and only two name the lab that verified them.
• Leaving it unanchored. An unbolted safe can be tipped, moved or worked on from angles the maker never intended. Bolt it down before you load it.
• Having no plan for a lockout. Electronic locks run on batteries. Know your safe's backup entry before you need it and keep the manual. If you're locked out, use the maker's key or backup procedure as the manual describes, then contact the maker or a licensed locksmith.
