Gun Safes · The rankings
Best gun safes for a storage unit: no power, no anchor, no climate control
A rented unit removes the three things a gun safe normally relies on. The safes that work there are the heavy ones with a lock that does not need a battery, plus a desiccant you can recharge at home.

People look for a gun safe for a storage unit for sensible reasons: a move, a deployment, a renovation, a house with no space, a collection that has outgrown a closet. The right safe for that job is not the same as the right safe for a bedroom, because a rented unit quietly removes three things a gun safe normally depends on.
We do not test safes. Every figure below is the maker's published specification or a named dealer's spec sheet, linked at the value it supports and checked 2026-10-17. Each brand carries a dated CPSC recall search on its card.
Read the rental agreement before you buy anything
The three problems a unit creates
- No power. No outlet means no dehumidifier rod, no interior light, and no way to charge anything. It also means a dead keypad battery is a locked safe you cannot open on the day you turn up with a van.
- No climate control, unless you pay for it. A standard unit tracks outdoor temperature and humidity. Steel, bluing, wood stocks and ammunition all suffer in that cycle; SAAMI's own storage recommendations are explicit about cool, dry storage for ammunition.
- Usually no anchoring. Drilling a rented concrete floor is normally a lease breach, and the anchor is what converts weight into security everywhere else. In a unit, weight has to do the whole job on its own.
Those three constraints flip the usual rankings. A 365 lb safe with a great keypad, which would be a sensible bedroom buy, is a poor unit buy. An 1,081 lb safe with a mechanical dial, which is overkill in a flat, is exactly right.
How we ranked them
The published rubric at how we rate applies, reweighted for this situation:
- Weight, because it is the only security you can install. Our picks run 365 to 1,081 lb, and the heavy end leads.
- An entry method that does not depend on a battery. A mechanical dial as standard, a mechanical upgrade, or at minimum a drill-resistant bypass key.
- Independent ratings where they exist, then published steel and bolt patterns.
The published numbers
The AMSEC BFX6030 is the only safe here that ships a UL-rated mechanical dial as the standard lock, with an electronic option rather than the other way round. That single specification is why it leads a page about unattended storage. It also carries a UL RSC Level 1 listing (what that means) and an ETL-verified fire rating, which no other pick here can claim.
Locks: the battery is the part that fails you
A unit you visit twice a year is the worst possible environment for an electronic lock. Batteries self-discharge in heat, low-battery warnings happen when nobody is there to see them, and the fix usually requires the keypad to still have enough power to respond. Three practical routes, in order of preference:
- A mechanical dial. Nothing to discharge. The BFX6030 has one as standard; Stealth and Liberty offer dial upgrades on their UL lines, and Hollon fits UL-listed Sargent & Greenleaf units on the Crescent Shield series.
- A drill-resistant bypass key. The Steelwater HD593924 publishes a high-security, double-bitted bypass key alongside its keypad. Keep the key somewhere other than the unit.
- An externally accessible battery compartment. Stealth's UL14 loads batteries from outside the door, which at least makes the failure recoverable on the spot.
If you are stuck with a keypad, change the batteries on a calendar schedule rather than on warning, and read how to open a gun safe with a dead battery before you need it. Our electronic vs mechanical locks comparison covers the wider trade.
Humidity with no outlet
Warming rods, the usual answer, need power. In a unit the only thing that works is desiccant, which means something you take home periodically and recharge. The Hydrosorbent SG-750 is a 750 g indicating silica gel canister rated for up to 57 cu ft of enclosed space, with a blue-to-pink colour change telling you when it is saturated and an oven recharge cycle. A rechargeable electric unit like the Eva-Dry models recharges from a wall outlet at home and then sits cordless in the safe, which also works if you are visiting regularly.
Size it on the safe's interior volume, not the unit. Our dehumidifier rankings list the published coverage figures, from 57 to 500 cu ft, and gun safe humidity levels gives the target range. Also put a hygrometer inside with a min/max memory, so your next visit tells you what the last six months did.
Anchoring, and what to do when you cannot
If the operator permits floor anchoring in writing, do it, and read how to bolt down a gun safe. If not, the substitutes are modest but real:
- Buy mass. 800 to 1,100 lb cannot be tipped onto a dolly by one person, and a unit corridor gives a thief nowhere to work quietly.
- Put the door against an obstruction. A safe facing a wall with 18 inches of clearance is a safe nobody can work on with a pry bar.
- Do not advertise it. No brand-printed boxes, no gun-club stickers, nothing visible when the door is open.
- Choose the unit, not just the safe. Interior units with facility-monitored access, lighting and a camera on the corridor are a different risk profile from a drive-up row.
And be honest about the floor if the unit is upstairs: a 900 lb safe plus contents is a point load. The arithmetic in can your floor support a gun safe applies to a commercial building too, and the operator may simply not allow it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a storage unit is a legal grey area you can ignore. It is a contract, and the operator's prohibited-items list is part of it.
- Buying light because it has to be moved. A safe light enough to move easily is light enough to steal. Hire movers once instead of buying down.
- Trusting a keypad you will not see for months. Mechanical dial, or a bypass key you keep at home.
- Leaving no desiccant and no hygrometer. You will not find out what the unit did to your steel until it has already done it.
- Storing the only key or combination record inside the unit. Keep it at home, in the safe you can still open.

Best weight for the money
Steelwater Extreme Duty 39 (HD593924)

What the evidence supports
- 9-gauge body steel, thicker than the 12 gauge California's standard asks for
- 20 bolts of 1.5 in diameter cover all four sides of the door, including the hinge side
- Anchor holes are reinforced with 1/4 in plate, and a bypass key covers a dead keypad
- The warranty spells out that burglary coverage requires floor anchoring, so the bolt-down step is not optional
Where it falls short
- No UL RSC listing is named: heavy steel is published, but no lab has rated the burglary resistance
- The 2-hour, 1,875°F fire rating is the maker's claim; no independent lab is named
- 932 lb concentrated on a 39 x 24 in footprint is a floor-load question for anything but a slab or reinforced floor

- 16 in interior depth leaves real room for scoped rifles
- Lifetime fire replacement guarantee is published
Where it falls short

How to buy for a rented unit
1. Get the operator's answer in writing
What is prohibited, whether anchoring is allowed, and whether the unit is climate controlled. Those three answers decide the purchase.
2. Buy the heaviest safe you can get into the unit
Weight is the only security measure you can install without the operator's permission. Measure the corridor and the door opening before you order.
3. Insist on battery-independent entry
A mechanical dial first, a drill-resistant bypass key second. Keep the key or the combination record at home.
4. Put desiccant and a hygrometer in on day one
Size the desiccant to the safe's interior volume and set the hygrometer to record minimum and maximum, so each visit tells you something.
5. Plan the exit
Storage is temporary by definition. Know what moving the safe will cost and who will do it before you put it in, because that number does not get smaller.
How we scored this
Every pick, checked against the paperwork
Here is exactly what goes into a score: whether an independent lab listed the safe (UL for burglary under UL 1037, UL or Intertek for fire), the maker's published steel, lock and bolt-down specs, the owner's manual, a dated CPSC recall search, and a public rubric applied the same way to every safe. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can confirm the pick in a couple of clicks and buy with confidence.
Scores are our editorial judgment of that documented evidence. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
