Home safes and fire safes: what each one actually protects
A fire chest, a burglary safe and a wall safe solve three different problems. We sort home safes by the threat they stop and by who verified the fire and water claims.

Best home safes: which one stops the threat you actually face?
Top pick: AMSEC BF1512. Carries both a UL RSC Level I burglary rating and a 60-minute, 1,700°F fire rating the maker attributes to UL, built around a 1/2 in steel plate door; a dealer-sold benchmark, not an Amazon buy.
Sold through dealers, not Amazon. Plain link: we don't earn a commission there.
What to buy first
Start with the thing you'd hate most to lose, and what would take it from you. For most households, that's paper: passports, birth certificates, deeds, wills and insurance policies, where the threats are fire and the water used to put it out. A UL-classified fire chest or fire safe with a verified water rating is the first purchase. Our document safe picks cover portable chests and file boxes, and our fire safe rankings cover larger safes sorted by who certified the rating.
If theft is the bigger worry (cash, jewelry, watches), the rating that matters is a burglary rating, and the safe has to be bolted down. Our best home safes list starts there, and our jewelry safe picks apply the same test to drawer-style safes. If you mainly want small valuables out of sight, our wall safe rankings cover in-wall safes that fit between the studs, and what they can't do.
How home safes divide: four tiers, three threats
Every safe on this site carries one protection tier, and each tier answers a different threat. An access box keeps children and unauthorized hands out, and that's all it claims; most small keypad safes, jewelry safes and wall safes sit here. A fire chest holds heat out for its rated time, with minimal burglary resistance. A UL RSC safe has been rated against a timed hand-tool attack. A UL TL-rated safe resists a timed expert attack with power tools, but those are commercial-grade and rarely sold on Amazon.
The two ratings you'll meet most often measure different things. UL's Residential Security Container standard defines Level 1 as a "five-minute attack by one technician using common hand tools such as drills, screwdrivers and hammers" (UL). It says nothing about fire. UL 72, the fire standard for record containers, names classes by interior temperature: "Class 350 rated devices are intended to protect paper records," while Classes 150 and 125 are for photographic and computer media (UL Standards & Engagement). It says nothing about burglary. Of the home safes we list, only one carries lab evidence for both.
What decides the price
Price in this category follows the evidence and the materials:
- An independent listing. A UL RSC burglary rating or a UL-classified fire rating is the biggest step up. Safes that carry both sit at the top of the range, and several are sold through dealers rather than Amazon.
- Fire duration. A longer UL rating usually means more weight and cost. Master Lock's 2-hour STW123GTCML weighs about 40 lb more than SentrySafe's 1-hour SFW123GDC, with the same interior dimensions.
- Steel and boltwork. Thicker plate doors, heavier-gauge bodies and more bolts raise both weight and price.
- The lock. A UL-listed electronic lock with a hard plate and re-locker, or a mechanical dial, costs more than a basic keypad or a tubular key.
- Water sealing and size. A verified water rating and more interior space both push the cost up.
Drawers, lining, lights and outlets are conveniences. They add to the price without adding protection.
The biggest buyer mistake
Assuming one label covers every threat. Most of the fire safes we list, however "fireproof" the box looks, carry no burglary rating. A safe with a burglary rating may carry a fire claim that names no lab. And some ratings change once the safe is installed: SentrySafe's manual for its SFW fire safes says the ETL-verified water claim applies only before the bolt-down kit goes on, and SentrySafe and Master Lock both warn that bolting a fire safe to a wall compromises the fire rating. Read the evidence line for the threat you actually care about, and read the manual before you drill.

SentrySafe names UL and Intertek (ETL) behind its fire and water ratings. Honeywell's small chest names UL for fire, but its steel safe names no lab and its own page and manual disagree on the test temperature.

Safe Ratings Explained
Is Any Safe Fireproof?
No safe is "fireproof." A rating means the interior stayed under a set temperature for a set time in a lab furnace. Here is where real fires and wildfires go past that.
