Gun Safes · The rankings
Best gun safes for a garage: pick for moisture and fire, not floor space
A garage gives you a concrete slab to anchor into and all the room you want. It also gives you temperature swings, condensation, and a fire that grows unnoticed. Those are the things that should pick the safe.

Most people who search for a garage gun safe are solving a space problem. The garage is where a 900-lb box can go without anyone measuring a staircase, and where a delivery driver can put it down on a slab and leave. All of that is true and all of it is a good reason. But a garage changes three things about the job the safe has to do, and none of them are about space.
Those three things are heat and cold, moisture, and fire detection. Get them right and a garage is an excellent place for a safe. Ignore them and you have rusting rifles inside a box that will be in the middle of a fire before anyone in the house hears an alarm.
What a garage does to a safe
Read those together and the buying logic for a garage falls out. You want more fire rating than you would accept indoors, and you want it from someone other than the maker where you can get it. You want a body and a door you can measure, because a garage safe is often the most accessible thing in the house from the street. And you want a plan for moisture from day one rather than after the first spring.
How we ranked them
Same published rubric as every ranking on this site (how we rate): independent burglary certification 30 percent, construction 20, fire evidence 20, lock and entry 15, fit 10, support and transparency 5. For a garage we added two tie-breakers on top:
- Who measured the fire rating. A lab-verified hour beats a maker's two hours, and in a garage the fire question is doing more work than it does in a bedroom.
- Does it help with moisture? An interior outlet is a small feature that decides whether you can run a warming rod without drilling the body of a brand-new safe.
We do not test safes. Every number here is published by the maker or a named retailer, linked at the figure it supports and checked 2026-10-10, with a dated CPSC recall search per brand on each card.
The evidence side by side
Two picks carry a maker-stated UL RSC listing: the Stealth UL28 and the Kodiak KGX5933W. That listing means the design resisted a timed attack with common hand tools under UL 1037 — at Level 1, one technician, five minutes (UL), explained in full in our UL RSC explainer. One pick, the AMSEC SF6030, has a fire rating an outside lab verified: ETL-verified 60 minutes at 1,200°F. Everything else prints a manufacturer fire claim, which ranges from 60 minutes at 1,875°F to 120 minutes at 1,400°F with no lab named anywhere. Our safe fire ratings explainer shows why those numbers are not comparable across brands, and are fireproof safes really fireproof covers what any of them actually buy you.
Garage fires grow unnoticed, so buy the rating you can check
The USFA report is the single most useful document for anyone putting a safe in a garage. Its findings say the quiet part out loud: the room with the most ignition sources is also the room with the least detection. A fire-rated safe is a clock. It promises to hold the inside below a stated temperature for a stated time at a stated furnace temperature. If the fire runs for twenty minutes before anyone notices and another fifteen before water arrives, you have already spent a large part of an hour-rated safe.
Two practical consequences. First, prefer verified fire evidence in a garage: on this page that is the SF6030. Second, fix the detection gap rather than buying a bigger number. A smoke or heat alarm rated for garage installation, and keeping flammable liquids away from the safe, do more for your rifles than the difference between a 60 and a 90-minute claim.
Condensation is the thing that actually damages guns in a garage
Burglary is the risk people shop for. Corrosion is the one that shows up. Liberty's write-up on humidity and firearms is blunt about the mechanism: when warm, moist air meets cold steel, water condenses on the steel. A garage does that twice a day in spring and autumn. The EPA's guide to mold and moisture is the reference for keeping indoor humidity controlled generally, and our gun safe humidity levels guide gives the target range to aim for and how to measure it rather than guess.
The order of operations in a garage:
- Measure before you treat. A hygrometer inside the safe tells you whether you have a problem and how big; our guide to safe hygrometers covers what to buy and where to put the sensor.
- Then dry the air. A plug-in warming rod works continuously and needs an outlet, which is why an interior outlet matters; a rechargeable desiccant unit needs no power but needs remembering. Both are ranked in our dehumidifier roundup, and electric vs rechargeable dehumidifiers compares the two approaches.
- Raise the safe off the slab. Concrete wicks moisture. A couple of pressure-treated shims or a rubber mat under the base breaks that path, and still lets you anchor through.
The slab is the garage's real advantage
Everything that makes a safe hard to put upstairs makes it easy to put in a garage. A concrete slab takes 1,081 lb without a calculation, and anchoring into concrete is the strongest bolt-down available to a homeowner: a wedge or sleeve anchor in a slab beats lag screws into joists every time. Every pick on this page ships pre-drilled, the Steelwater reinforces its anchor holes with quarter-inch plate, and how to bolt down a gun safe walks through doing it without compromising a fire rating.
Two garage-specific anchoring notes. Place the safe so the door swings away from where a car parks, not into it. And think about sight lines: an open garage door turns your safe into a shop window. Put it where it is not visible from the street, or accept that concealment is not part of your plan and rely on the anchor and the listing instead.
Water, flooding and the one pick that addresses it
Garages flood more than any other room, because they sit at the lowest point of the house, open to the weather once a day. The Sports Afield SA5930HX is the only pick that publishes a water claim and ships a waterproof bolt-down kit, which is a real design answer to a real garage problem. Be clear-eyed about it: the water figure is the maker's claim with no lab named, and the body is 14 gauge against 9 and 12 gauge elsewhere on the page. It is the right pick if standing water is a documented risk in your garage, and the wrong one if burglary is your main worry.
Common mistakes
- Buying the biggest fire number. In a garage, who measured it matters more than the figure. A verified hour is better evidence than an unverified two hours.
- Standing the safe directly on the slab and forgetting it. Concrete holds and transmits moisture. Break the contact and run a dehumidifier.
- Treating the garage as a secure room. The overhead door, the side door and the window are usually the weakest entries in the house. The safe is doing the work, so it needs the listing and the anchor.
- Skipping the detection fix. Few codes require a smoke alarm in a garage. Adding one is the cheapest fire protection on this page.
- Storing ammunition next to the paint shelf. Keep ammunition cool, dry and away from ignition sources; our ammo storage guide covers the published guidance.

Three pages cover the environments and ratings a garage install runs into:
- can you put a gun safe in a shed — the same humidity problem without a slab or anyone in earshot.
- best gun safes for a storage unit — unconditioned space with no power and no anchor at all.
- are gun safes waterproof — the one gun safe in our registry with a published water claim.

What the evidence supports
- The maker states a UL RSC burglary listing, the independent burglary standard this site ranks gun safes on
- 12-gauge door and body with twelve 1.25 in bolts on all four sides of the door
- UL-listed electronic lock with a re-locker, and a mechanical dial offered for buyers who want no electronics

How to buy a safe for a garage
1. Decide whether the garage is heated
An insulated, heated garage behaves like a basement and you can shop normally. An unheated one swings through 100°F in a year, and every decision below gets more important.
2. Set your fire floor higher than you would indoors
Detection is slower and fuel loads are higher in a garage. Prefer a rating a lab measured, and treat a maker-only claim as a floor rather than a promise.
3. Insist on a burglary listing if the garage is accessible
A UL RSC listing is the entry-level independent burglary standard and the one worth holding out for in a room with an overhead door. Two picks here carry one.
4. Plan power before delivery
If there is no outlet near where the safe will stand, you are choosing a rechargeable desiccant unit by default. An interior outlet in the safe plus a nearby wall socket is what makes a permanent warming rod and a light possible.
5. Anchor into the slab, and raise the base
Four concrete anchors, a mat or shims under the base to break the moisture path, and the door swinging clear of the car. That is the whole installation.
6. Budget for the inside of the safe
A dehumidifier, a hygrometer and a light are what make a garage safe survivable for steel and usable in the dark. None of the picks here include all three.
How we scored this
Every pick, checked against the paperwork
Here is exactly what goes into a score: whether an independent lab listed the safe (UL for burglary under UL 1037, UL or Intertek for fire), the maker's published steel, lock and bolt-down specs, the owner's manual, a dated CPSC recall search, and a public rubric applied the same way to every safe. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can confirm the pick in a couple of clicks and buy with confidence.
Scores are our editorial judgment of that documented evidence. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
