What a gun cabinet does, and what it doesn't

A gun cabinet has one job: keep firearms away from hands that shouldn't have them, especially children's. That's a real job. Firearm-safety groups recommend storing guns locked and unloaded, with ammunition stored separately, and Project ChildSafe's guidance, quoted by RAND, says "unloaded firearms should be stored in a locked cabinet, safe, gun vault or storage case" (RAND, Personal Firearm Storage in the United States). A locked, anchored cabinet meets that description.

What a cabinet doesn't do is stop a burglar with tools or protect against fire. None of the six cabinets here claims a burglary rating or a fire rating, and Barska's spec sheet says outright "Fireproof: No." The steel tells the same story. Surelock publishes a 21-gauge body and 19-gauge door for its Combat 10; California's gun-safe standard starts at a 12-gauge body for a single-walled safe (11 CCR § 4100), and gauge runs backward, so 21-gauge is far thinner. That isn't a flaw in a cabinet. It's a different product for a different threat.

When a cabinet is the right buy

• The threat is access, not theft. A household with children, teenagers or regular visitors, where the goal is that nobody but you can reach the firearms.
• Weight or floor rules out a safe. The cabinets here weigh 47 to 115 lb in their makers' spec tables, against 230 lb for the lightest true gun safe we rank.
• You need a home-defense long gun locked but reachable. The Hornady and SecureIt Fast Box are built for fast, controlled access in a closet or under a bed.
• As a second layer. A cabinet inside a locked room or closet, or a small locker for the one long gun you keep near the bedroom while the rest live in a safe.

When isn't it the right buy? When the collection is valuable enough that theft is a real worry, when fire is a concern, or when you're buying a cabinet only because a safe feels like too much. How we scored cabinets

Cabinets aren't scored on our gun-safe rubric. Because their job is access control, we score them on the rubric we use for quick-access and access-control containers (see how we rate): access reliability evidence carries 30% of the score, construction and pry resistance 25%, child-access standards 20%, mounting 15%, and support and transparency 10%. That means a cabinet's score and a gun safe's score aren't comparable. A 7.2 here says a cabinet does its job well, not that it's close to a listed safe.

In practice, cabinets earned points for more than one way in (keypad or RFID plus a key), a low-battery warning or wall power, a stated child-access standard, published steel, mounting hardware and a warranty. The picks in context

1. Hornady RAPiD Safe AR Gunlocker

The strongest access-control evidence of the group. Hornady says it exceeds ASTM standards "for child and pry resistance, lock strength, drop/pick/saw tests and hinge attack resistance" and meets California DOJ firearm-safety-device criteria. It opens by RFID tag (wristband, fob or sticker), keypad or two barrel keys, runs on wall power with battery backup, and has a 16-gauge housing with four hardened locking lugs. The limit is size: a 40.5 in interior for two tactical-length rifles or shotguns. Hornady's page doesn't state warranty terms.

2. Barska AX11652

A 63 lb, 9.8 in wide fingerprint cabinet with two backup keys, an external battery pack, a 5-point deadbolt system and published 2 mm steel, plus a maker-stated California DOJ approval for storage. The 6.3 in interior depth limits it to four unscoped rifles, and the warranty is one year.

3. SecureIt Fast Box Model 47

A 14-gauge welded box, 6.5 in deep, with a 3-point lock and a full-length piano hinge. It mounts under a bed, in a closet or on a wall with included hardware, and opens by keypad, fingerprint or override key. It holds one long gun horizontally or two with optics vertically.

4. SecureIt Agile Model 52

The most practical full-height cabinet here for several long guns: six up to 48.25 in, by SecureIt's "true capacity" figure. It assembles in the room, opens by keypad, fingerprint or two override keys, and has a USB-C port for backup power. Mounting hardware isn't included, and SecureIt warns an unanchored, empty cabinet can tip when the door opens.

5. First Watch 14-Gun Steel Security Cabinet

Key-only, with no electronics to fail: a tubular key lock driving a steel locking rod, a tube-reinforced door frame and a full-length piano hinge, holding up to 14 guns. Homak includes hardware for two wall studs, and its manual is blunt that the cabinet "may tip over" if it isn't secured. The steel gauge isn't published.

6. Surelock Security Combat 10

The lightest steel here, and honest about it: a 21-gauge body and 19-gauge door, a 3-point lock and a 3-year warranty, for up to 10 long guns up to 52.5 in. At 52 lb it's only as secure as its anchoring. Buy it as a basic child-access locker when a better cabinet or a safe isn't possible yet.

What to look for in a gun cabinet

1. At least two ways in. A keypad, fingerprint or RFID lock plus a mechanical key, so a dead battery or a failed sensor doesn't lock you out. Keep the key as carefully as the firearms.
2. A stated child-access standard. A maker that names the standard (ASTM, or California's firearm-safety-device criteria) gives you something to check. If you're in California, look the exact model up on the DOJ's roster of approved firearm safety devices.
3. Published steel and a real lock. A gauge you can compare and a named locking system (lugs, deadbolts, a locking rod) beat "heavy-duty steel."
4. Mounting holes and hardware. Check whether hardware is included; the Agile's isn't, the Fast Box's and First Watch's are.
5. A warranty you can read. Terms here run from one year (Barska, First Watch) to three years (Surelock) to lifetime against defects with two years on electronic locks (SecureIt). Hornady's product page doesn't state its terms.
6. Interior length and depth that fit your guns. The longest-gun limits here run from a 40.5 in interior (Hornady) to 52.5 in (Surelock). Scoped rifles need depth that narrow cabinets like the Barska don't have.

Will your long guns fit?

Cabinet counts, like safe counts, assume slim, unscoped guns. Barska says so outright: its four-rifle figure is for rifles "without scopes or accessories." Check the length limit and the depth against your own firearms before you buy:

Measure your longest firearm overall, then the widest point of anything with an optic. If a scoped rifle is part of the plan, the Agile's 12.25 in depth or the Fast Box mounted upright are the realistic options here; for several scoped rifles, look at long gun safes instead.

Anchor it, every time

A light cabinet that isn't anchored can be tipped over or carried out. Homak's First Watch manual says it plainly: "This cabinet is not designed to be used without securing it to a wall or other surface. It may tip over." Fasten the cabinet to wall studs or the floor with the maker's hardware or hardware rated for your wall, and follow the maker's instructions. Keep those instructions and any leftover hardware with your records, so the cabinet can be re-anchored the same way after a move. Cabinets, kids and the law

Child-access prevention (CAP) laws let prosecutors bring charges against adults who intentionally or carelessly allow children unsupervised access to firearms. RAND reports that, as of January 1, 2025, 35 states and the District of Columbia had CAP laws, and that they vary in what triggers liability (RAND, The Effects of Child-Access Prevention Laws). Cabinet mistakes

• Treating a cabinet as theft protection. It keeps hands out; it doesn't stop tools.
• Hiding the key somewhere a child can find it. On a key-only cabinet like the First Watch, the key is the whole lock.
• Skipping the anchors because the cabinet feels heavy enough. None of these weighs more than 115 lb.
• Leaving ammunition in an unlocked drawer. The safety guidance RAND summarizes recommends storing ammunition separately and locked too. A second small lockable box does it.
• Buying for today's guns only. A cabinet that's full on day one invites leaving the next firearm outside it.
• Forcing a stuck lock. Use the maker's override key or procedure as the manual describes, then contact the maker or a licensed locksmith.
