Best gun safes under $1,000: what that budget actually buys

"Best gun safe under $1,000" is a budget question, but the useful answer is a category question. Below that line the market is steel cabinets, welded lockers and rapid-access boxes. Above it you start to find composite doors, fire boards and, eventually, a laboratory listing. Knowing exactly where that transition happens is worth more than another paragraph about gauges.

Where the UL line actually sits

We priced every long-gun product in our registry against its maker's published price. Here is the ladder, which is the single most useful thing on this page:

That is the honest shape of the market. A UL residential security container listing means a technician was timed attacking the safe with common hand tools (UL). What $1,000 does buy

Quite a lot, as long as you are honest about which problem you are solving.

• Reliable access control. Every pick here keeps children, visiting teenagers and houseguests away from firearms. That is the most common real-world risk in a household, not a professional burglary.
• Published steel, sometimes. SecureIt states 14-gauge welded steel on both its models, Hornady states 16 gauge with four hardened locking lugs, Barska states 2 mm. Homak publishes a pry-resistant reinforced door frame rather than a gauge.
• Legal compliance where it applies. The Barska AX11652 and Hornady AR Gunlocker are both stated by their makers to be California DOJ approved. California's own standard sets minimums such as 12-gauge steel for a single-walled safe, and accepts a UL RSC rating as an alternative route (11 CCR § 4100, via Cornell LII). A DOJ-approved cabinet and a UL-listed safe are not the same thing.
• Real anchoring provision. All five have mounting holes. Used properly, that changes the product more than any spec on the box.

What it does not buy: a burglary listing, and in most cases any fire rating at all.

A note on the check-price buttons

This site runs without live pricing, so each row's button opens a current search for that exact model rather than printing a number we cannot keep fresh. The list prices above come from the makers' own pages and are dated. If a retailer's price is far below the maker's list, check you are looking at the same model number: cabinet ranges reuse names across very different builds.

Each is scored on the access-control rubric published at how we rate: 30% access reliability evidence, 25% construction and pry resistance, 20% child-access standards, 15% mounting, 10% support and transparency. The Agile 52 leads on capacity, published steel, a keypad plus fingerprint reader with two override keys, and USB-C backup power, at the top of the budget. The AR Gunlocker ranks second on the strongest published construction here and a CA DOJ listing, for one or two defensive long guns. The Barska is third: DOJ approved and biometric, on 2 mm steel. The First Watch is fourth on sheer capacity for the money. The Fast Box is fifth on capacity and first if you need something that disappears under a bed.

On fingerprint locks generally: enrol your prints, then check that an unregistered finger is refused. CPSC has recalled and warned about several biometric gun safes in recent years. What to look for at this budget

1. A published steel figure. A gauge or a millimetre number means the maker is willing to be measured. "Heavy duty steel" with no number usually means thin.
2. Backup entry that works with flat batteries. Override keys on the SecureIt models, barrel keys with the Hornady, backup keys and an external battery pack on the Barska. Check this before you buy, not at 2 a.m.
3. Mounting holes and the hardware to use them. An unanchored 63 lb cabinet is a container that leaves with the thief and can also tip onto a child.
4. Interior that matches your guns. Measure your longest rifle with its optic. Published capacities assume bare guns: Barska's 4-rifle figure is explicitly "when stored with no scopes or accessories".
5. A warranty you can read. Homak and Barska publish 1-year terms; SecureIt publishes a 90-day buy-it-back guarantee alongside its warranty policy. Short terms are not disqualifying, but know them.
6. CA DOJ approval if you are in California, and check the current roster yourself rather than trusting a product page alone. See CA DOJ approved gun safes.

Anchoring is the free upgrade

At this budget, anchoring is the single largest improvement available, and it costs the price of four bolts. UL's own residential security container notice treats reliable mounting as an alternative to the drop test for safes of 750 lb or less, which tells you how seriously the standard takes it.

A 115 lb cabinet bolted through the floor into joists, or through a wall into studs, is a completely different product from the same cabinet standing free. Fire ratings under $1,000

There essentially are none. Barska lists the AX11652 as "Fireproof: No". SecureIt, Homak and Hornady do not claim fire ratings on these models. The first fire rating on the price ladder appears at the Stealth EGS14, $1,099.99 for 30 minutes at 1,200°F, and the first hour-long rating at the Steelwater SW592818, $1,399.00 for 60 minutes at 1,875°F.

If fire is a real part of your risk, the cost-effective answer at this budget is usually a cabinet for the guns plus a small rated chest for documents, rather than a cheap safe claiming both. When it is worth stretching past $1,000

• You want a listing, not a description. The jump from $699 to $1,399.99 buys the UL RSC test on the Stealth UL14. Nothing below it does.
• You are storing more than about six long guns. The Kodiak KBX5629 at $1,258.00 is rated for 42, which the cabinets here are not.
• Fire matters and everything is in one box. The Steelwater at $1,399.00 publishes 12-gauge steel and a 60-minute rating.
• You live somewhere with a real burglary risk and tools in the garage. Read gun safe vs gun cabinet before deciding that access control is enough.

Common mistakes under $1,000

• Buying a safe-shaped cabinet and believing it is a safe. Check for a listing, not a silhouette.
• Paying for a 30-minute fire rating instead of buying a rated document chest and a better cabinet.
• Leaving the cabinet unanchored because the closet floor is awkward.
• Trusting a published gun count that assumes bare rifles with no optics.
• Choosing a biometric lock without testing that an unregistered finger is refused.
• Shopping on discount percentage rather than on what the maker publishes about the steel.
