Can your floor support a gun safe? Weight, footprint and second floors

A slab floor rarely raises the question. An upstairs bedroom can. Here is what safes weigh, what the building code actually says about floors, and when to get a professional opinion.

Most gun safe buyers ask this question after the safe is chosen, which is backward. The weight of a safe is part of its security (thieves struggle to move it), but that same weight has to come down through your floor framing for as long as the safe stands there. This guide explains what safes weigh, what the building code does and doesn't tell you, and the signs that a location needs a professional opinion. We don't give floor capacities for your house; nobody can without looking at it.

What gun safes weigh

Weight varies by a factor of more than ten across the gun safes we cover. These are the makers' published empty weights and exterior sizes, from light to heavy:

Those are empty weights. Contents add to them. Liberty Safe's advice on moving a safe says a loaded gun safe can weigh well over a thousand pounds, in many cases two or three thousand, and that some floors and stairs aren't built to handle that weight. Plan for the safe full, not the safe on the delivery ticket. Notice too that a listing doesn't always put the weight up front, so find it, or ask the maker, before you buy for an upstairs room.

What the building code designs floors for

Houses in many states are built to the International Residential Code, adopted with state amendments. Its Table R301.5 sets minimum uniformly distributed live loads, meaning the weight of people and belongings a floor must be designed to carry, averaged over the floor. As published in state adoptions such as Washington's residential code and California's 2025 Residential Code, the table includes:

Three things about those numbers matter for a safe:

  • They are minimums for design, not a measured capacity. Your floor may be built stronger. Dean Safe, a safe dealer, points out in its explainer on raised floors that the 40 psf figure is a minimum design load, and that joist size, spacing and span, set by local codes and engineering, decide the real strength.
  • They describe load spread across the room. A safe is the opposite: a lot of weight on a small patch of floor. The table doesn't answer the question by itself.
  • Bedrooms have the lower minimum. Sleeping rooms are designed to 30 psf rather than 40, and bedroom closets are where many people want a safe.

Point load vs distributed load

Think of the difference between a room full of furniture and a single piano. The furniture spreads its weight across many joists. The piano puts its weight on a few. Engineers call the first a distributed load and the second a concentrated, or point, load. A gun safe is a concentrated load.

Some simple arithmetic shows how concentrated. The Stealth UL28 weighs 529 pounds on a base of 28 by 20 inches, about 3.9 square feet. That works out to roughly 136 pounds on each square foot under the safe, before anything goes inside. This is not a comparison with the 40 psf design figure, and it doesn't mean the floor fails. As Dean Safe puts it, there will be more than 40 psf under your safe, and that's acceptable because you aren't filling the whole floor with safes: the surrounding floor carries far less, and the framing shares the load.

What decides whether the sharing works is local, and it is exactly what a code table can't see:

  • How many joists the safe sits across. A base laid across several joists shares the load among them. Dean Safe notes that most safes sit flush on the floor rather than on four legs, which spreads weight over a larger area.
  • How far the spot is from a support. Dean Safe explains that shorter joist spans are stronger and longer spans weaker, so a spot near a bearing wall carries more than one in the middle of a long span.
  • The condition of the wood. Dean Safe lists insect damage, dry rot, knots in high-stress zones and notches cut for pipes or ducts as things that weaken a joist, and warns that a long-duration load on a wood floor can cause permanent deflection that increases over years.

Second floors and bedrooms

Can you put a gun safe on the second floor? Often, yes: Dean Safe's bottom line is that a raised wood floor is more than likely capable of bearing a safe if you place it sensibly. But the upstairs case stacks three factors against you: a wood-framed floor rather than a slab, the lower 30 psf minimum for sleeping rooms, and a delivery up the stairs. Liberty's relocation guide tells owners to make sure the new location's floor can support the safe's weight, especially on an upper level, and calls basements or ground floors with concrete subflooring ideal.

A floor over a crawlspace is also a framed floor, even on the ground level, so the same questions apply. A basement slab or a slab-on-grade house removes most of them.

A quick look at your framing

You don't need to be an engineer to gather the facts an engineer will ask for. If the floor under the planned spot is visible from a basement or crawlspace below, note:

  • Which way the joists run, so you can orient the safe across them.
  • Their size and spacing, and roughly how far they run between supports (walls, beams or girders). Dean Safe notes that shorter spans make stronger floors.
  • Where the supports are, so you can pick a spot near one.
  • Anything that has weakened them: notches or holes cut for pipes and ducts, signs of rot or insect damage, or visible sag.

If the framing is hidden behind a finished ceiling, as it often is between floors, you can't see any of this, which is itself a reason to lean toward a lighter safe or a professional opinion for an upstairs room. Photos and measurements of whatever you can see make an engineer's visit quicker.

Placement that helps the floor

If the safe is going on a framed floor, where it sits in the room changes how the load reaches the structure. Dean Safe's guidance:

  1. Close to a bearing wall. Load near a support travels a short way to it.
  2. Across the joists, not along them. Orient the safe so its base crosses as many joists as possible.
  3. Not against a partition wall that runs with the joists. Dean Safe warns that an interior wall may be a non-structural partition with no support under it, which makes it a poor location for a very heavy safe.
  4. Strengthen before, not after. Dean Safe mentions blocking between joists and a steel plate under the safe as ways to spread load, and advises doing any strengthening before the safe goes in so the joists deflect together. Have an engineer or contractor specify it rather than improvising.

When to ask a structural engineer

A structural engineer can look at your framing and tell you what a particular spot can carry, and specify any reinforcement. We'd get that opinion before buying when:

  • The safe is one of the heavy ones in the table above and it's going on a wood-framed floor.
  • You can't put it near a bearing wall or across the joists.
  • The floor already sags, bounces or squeaks badly, or you know joists have been notched or cut for plumbing or ducts.
  • You don't know which way the joists run, how far they span, or what condition they're in.
  • You're planning reinforcement such as blocking or a steel plate.
  • You live in a condo or apartment: the structure belongs to the building, so ask management before a heavy safe goes in.

What you get from the visit is specific: whether the chosen spot can carry the safe as planned, whether a nearby spot is better, and if reinforcement is needed, what exactly to add and where. That turns a guess into a plan, and it gives whoever delivers and anchors the safe clear instructions. Bring the safe's published weight and footprint, plus an honest estimate of what will go inside it.

If none of that applies and the safe is on the lighter end, a careful placement near a bearing wall is often enough. When in doubt, the cost of an opinion is small next to the cost of a sagging floor.

If the engineer's answer, or your own caution, says keep it light, you don't have to give up evidence. Stairs and delivery

The floor is only half of the upstairs question. The safe has to get there, and stairs carry it on a few treads at a time. California's residential code table sets a 300-pound concentrated load on a single stair tread as a design minimum (or the uniform stair load, whichever produces greater stress). That is a minimum rather than a breaking point, but it is well below the weight of a full-size safe on a dolly plus the people steadying it. Liberty tells owners who move a safe themselves to make sure the stairs can hold the combined weight of the safe and the movers, and says professional movers can spot wooden stairs that can't support a safe. What we do instead: check whether an independent lab listed the safe (UL for burglary under UL 1037, UL or Intertek for fire), read the maker's published steel, lock and bolt-down specs, search CPSC recalls, and score every pick on a public rubric. How much does a gun safe weigh?

Can I put a gun safe on the second floor?
Often, yes, but check first. Upstairs floors are wood-framed, bedrooms have a lower code minimum (30 psf versus 40 psf for other rooms), and the load is concentrated. Place it near a bearing wall across the joists, and get a structural engineer's opinion for a heavy safe.
How much weight can a residential floor hold?
The model residential code sets minimum design loads of 40 pounds per square foot for most rooms and 30 for sleeping rooms, spread across the floor. That is a design minimum, not the capacity at a particular spot, which depends on the joists' size, span, spacing and condition.
Should a gun safe be placed against a wall?
On a framed floor, yes, if it's a load-bearing wall: load near a support has less distance to travel. A partition wall running parallel to the joists doesn't help, because there may be no support under it.
Do I need a structural engineer for a gun safe?
Not for a slab floor. Consider one for a heavy safe on a wood-framed floor, especially upstairs, if you can't place it near a bearing wall, if the floor already sags or has notched joists, or if you plan any reinforcement.
