Safe Ratings Explained · Guide

Are gun safes waterproof? Almost none of them, and the labels say so

Fire ratings are everywhere in this category and water ratings are almost nowhere. That gap matters, because the water that reaches a safe usually arrives from a fire hose rather than a river.

"Is a gun safe waterproof" is a question people usually ask after a flood warning or a house fire story, and the answer is uncomfortable. Fire claims are on every gun safe listing in the market. Water claims are so rare that in our whole registry exactly one gun safe publishes one.

We do not test safes. Everything below comes from manufacturers' published specifications and owner's manuals, plus the certification bodies' own descriptions, checked 2026-10-17. Each product we cite carries a dated CPSC recall search on its card.

What a water rating actually says

Which safes carry a water rating, and which do not

Across the products we document, the pattern is clean:

  • Document and fire safes: water ratings are common and often ETL verified. This is the category to buy if water is the threat.
  • Gun safes: the Sports Afield Haven SA5930HX is the only one in our registry with a published water claim, and the claim is the maker's own. Its warranty does cover natural flood, which is unusual and worth knowing.
  • Quick-access pistol boxes and cabinets: none. Vaultek states its safes are not fire rated, and nobody in this tier claims water resistance.
The water-rating rows are the point: two verified, one maker-claimed. Figures checked 2026-10-17.

The detail that catches everyone: bolting down can end the rating

This is in the manuals and almost never in the reviews. SentrySafe's manual for the SFW line states that the ETL-verified water claim applies before the bolt-down kit is installed, because anchoring puts holes through the floor of the safe. The Master Lock STW123GTCML says the opposite about itself: fire and water protection are maintained when it is bolted down, to the floor.

So on a small safe you may have to choose between a water rating and an anchor, which is a genuine trade because the anchor is the security. Three ways out of it:

  1. Pick a model whose maker states the rating survives anchoring, as Master Lock does.
  2. Put the unanchored water-rated chest inside a larger anchored safe, which solves both at once.
  3. Accept the anchor and treat water separately, with placement and a sealed inner container.

The fire hose is the likeliest flood

People buy for the river and get wet from the ceiling. A structure fire is fought with a great deal of water, and the safe is usually downstairs from it. Three consequences for anyone planning seriously:

  • A fire rating and no water rating is half a plan. The documents survive the heat and then sit in water for the hours it takes anybody to get back into the house.
  • Water finds the door gap. A gun safe door is a swinging plug with a deliberate clearance. Nothing about that geometry excludes water.
  • Heat plus water equals a humid safe for weeks. Which is where the slower damage happens; the EPA's guide to mold and moisture is the plain-English reference on why drying matters quickly.

Our gun safe fire ratings page covers the fire half of this, and best waterproof home safes is the shortlist if water is your main worry.

Safes that publish a water claim, and the desiccant for the rest

Our picks for this

What to buy if water is part of the threat

One gun safe with a maker water claim, two document safes with ETL-verified ratings, and the desiccant that handles the water problem no rating covers.

Condensation is the water you will definitely get

Flooding is a possibility. Condensation is a certainty, and it does its damage over years rather than hours. A steel box against an exterior wall, in a garage or in a basement cycles through the dew point every time the weather changes, and fireboard in the walls holds moisture by design. Liberty's own write-up on the impact of humidity on firearms is a maker telling you this plainly.

The fix is cheap and the order matters: measure, then treat, then re-measure.

  1. Put a hygrometer inside with a minimum and maximum memory, and leave it a fortnight.
  2. If the readings are high, add a dehumidifier sized on the interior volume. A rechargeable silica gel canister covers up to 57 cu ft; the electric rods and rechargeable units in our dehumidifier rankings go further.
  3. Re-measure. Gun safe humidity levels gives the target range and how to read it.

Placement does as much as any accessory. A safe on an interior wall, off a cold slab, in a room that is heated like the rest of the house, has a much easier time than the same safe in an unheated garage. See where to put a gun safe and can you put a gun safe in a shed.

If a safe does get wet

  • Open it as soon as you safely can. A sealed warm box full of damp air is the worst case for steel and paper alike.
  • Get everything out and dry it separately. Firearms wiped and oiled, documents air-dried flat, drives left to a professional if they were submerged.
  • Dry the safe before reloading it. Fireboard holds water for a long time. Leave the door open in a heated room, with a fan, for days rather than hours.
  • Check the lock and the bolts. If it was a fire as well as a flood, expect the electronics to need attention, and see how to open a gun safe with a dead battery.
  • Read your warranty. Several makers replace a safe after a fire; far fewer mention flood, and Sports Afield is the exception in our registry.

How we scored this

Every pick, checked against the paperwork

Here is exactly what goes into a score: whether an independent lab listed the safe (UL for burglary under UL 1037, UL or Intertek for fire), the maker's published steel, lock and bolt-down specs, the owner's manual, a dated CPSC recall search, and a public rubric applied the same way to every safe. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can confirm the pick in a couple of clicks and buy with confidence.

Scores are our editorial judgment of that documented evidence. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are gun safes waterproof?
Essentially no. Almost no gun safe carries a water rating, and the few that advertise one are publishing the manufacturer's own claim. Verified water ratings live on small fire-and-water document safes, where Intertek (ETL) verifies figures such as 8 inches of water for 24 hours.
Will a gun safe protect contents from firefighting water?
Not reliably. A gun safe door is a swinging plug with a deliberate clearance, and the body has anchor holes in the floor. If water matters, keep the vulnerable items in a sealed, water-rated container inside the safe.
Does bolting down a safe affect the water rating?
On some small safes, yes. SentrySafe's manual states that the ETL-verified water rating on its SFW line applies before the bolt-down kit is installed. Master Lock states the opposite for the STW123GTCML: fire and water protection are maintained when it is bolted to the floor. Read the manual for your model.
Can a gun safe rust inside?
Yes, and condensation rather than flooding is the usual cause. A sealed steel box with fireboard in the walls holds moisture, especially in a garage or basement. Measure the interior humidity with a hygrometer first, then size a dehumidifier to the interior volume.
What should I do if my safe has been in a flood?
Open it as soon as it is safe to, remove and dry everything separately, then dry the safe itself for days rather than hours with the door open in a heated room, because the fireboard holds water. Check the lock and the bolt mechanism before you trust it again, and check whether your warranty mentions flood at all.
